Is it worth living in the United States as an Indian immigrant, with so many limitations in terms of immigration and business? India and the US do not share good bilateral relations with Indian citizens, either. Vikram Garg Lives in The United States of America (2003–present)upxed Originally Answered: Is it worth living in United States as an Indian Immigrant? I came to America as a freshman undergrad (1st year) in 2003, and have lived here for more than a decade. I will say one thing before anything else. Living in an industrialized country with good infrastructure is addictive, especially for Indian and other countries with generally poor infrastructure. If you seek more comfort, and are bothered daily by stresses of transport, electricity and water supply, I would recommend migrating from India, to America or any other developed place. If you are not bothered by India’s infrastructure deficiencies, situation becomes a bit more complicated. America has the most advanced economy in the world on many, if not most fronts, and if you are an intelligent, hard working person, it is immensely rewarding (both intellectually and monetarily) to develop products and services for the most advanced consumer market in the world. If not its consumer market, its universities offer an unparalleled network of cutting edge knowledge production, and are a magnet for other high motivated and skilled researchers/students, working with whom is a privilege. So if you seek intellectual and financial growth, the US specifically is the place to be, much superior than even other developed regions. If you like to build businesses, and if you like to create wealth rather than be a satisfied employee, I would recommend you try hard in India. It is not impossible for an Indian to be an entrepreneur here, but the possibilities are less due to visa restrictions, and a lack of cultural context. Indian-origin entrepreneurs in the US tend to be concentrated in the tech sector, and and tend to be older than 35–40, since they can usually make this switch only after they obtain a Green Card. It is usually not possible for an Indian to build a business here in their 20s and early 30s. So in short, unless you want complete freedom to take entrepreneurial initiatives, America is a great place to live, work and raise a family. Addendum: On further reflection, and after seeing this video by a fellow India to US undergrader, I think there is an important reason to try one’s luck in India in one’s twenties. Th ability to bounce around and figure out what you want to do in life. Tenties are the time to explore, not just the world as a tourist, but also oneself by trying out different career paths. One needs to experience and understand the impact of different kinds of careers, the culture and work life of which industry suits them best and offers them the life opportunities they want. This is practically impossible if one moves to the US on a work visa for two reasons: Even in the best possible case, it is unlikely you will get a green card before the age of 28–29. By this time, you are almost through the decade of exploration. Your friend circle in the US is bound to be much narrower in scope (same kind of jobs/industry) and scale (different reference points from the majority of the population) than in India. More often than not, it is your network which will open the doors to different job opportunities. Jay Doshi Founder at Trishulent India (2014–present),Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India2012–present Originally Answered: Is it worth living in United States as an Indian Immigrant? I would say it's not worth living in US for an Indian immigrant anymore than compared to the 1980s-90s. India has a lot more opportunities now after capitalist reforms were created in 1991. It's possible to be rich and have a private enterprise in India today. It wasn't possible earlier. I know a lot of people like me returned to India as you could expand your family business and make more money than in US. In the US, Indians are minorities and its tough to climb the corporate ladder. Unless you have zero opportunities in India, its not advisable to migrate to US anymore.
